Meet Jenn Roach of One Two Three Photography
I specialize in capturing authentic interactions in natural settings to produce unique and timeless photographs. When evaluating a photograph I look beyond the setting, lighting, and pose to determine if there is a connection or spark that captures personalities and honest emotions. I am a wedding and family photographer based in Calgary, Alberta and am available worldwide. I am married to a wonderful man and had a beautiful daughter named Ruth in the summer of 2016. My interests include photography, reading, exploring, camping, kayaking, thrifting, hosting family and friends, and going out for a great cup of coffee or tea. You can see my recent work detailed by shoot on my Blog and an overview of my work in my Portfolio galleries. Please contact me for more information on availability.
My Experience as a Photographer
My journey with professional photography started more than 10 years ago, but even as a child I was buying deposable cameras intent on recording the way I saw the world. Starting on film taught me the value of waiting for the right moment.
I graduated in 2004 with top honours from the Photojournalism program at Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. I have photographed weddings, portraits of couples and individuals, families, newborns, beautiful scenery, war torn scenery, real estate, news events, and even professional sports. My experiences have given me a unique set of tricks and techniques, which allow me to quickly adapt to changing environments.
My goal is to present timeless photographs that will become cherished heirlooms, which can happen when captured professionally and preserved in archival quality albums or prints.
Why Choose a Photojournalist and Portrait Photographer
A true photojournalist is one that simply observes and does not participate in setting up shots or making suggestions and instead allows the story to present itself. I am a trained photojournalist and have covered news events and followed stories that have placed me as a true observer and documenter. I draw heavily on that experience when photographing weddings and families because I am always looking for unprompted moments and anticipating reactions so I’m ready to get the shot.
A wedding or family photographer needs to be able to anticipate moments, but also have the confidence to set up portraits, give suggestions, and work well with groups. My photojournalism background gives me the drive to capture people as they are, while my love of portraiture gives me the confidence to step in and direct as needed.
In any session I do, whether it is a wedding or a newborn session, I give minor suggestions and guidance to capture the best shots, but I am prepared for a moment when a new husband kisses his wife’s hand or a little boy suddenly comes over to study his new little sister. Those unexpected moments are what keep me excited to be a documentary photographer.
My favourite photographs are those that are unscripted and happen naturally because I know I can’t do any better than those authentic moments.
What to Expect at a Photography Session
My priority is to make each session feel as relaxed and natural as possible and I will work with you to choose locations, settings, or activities that will best reflect you and your loved ones. There is no set list of posed photos or a box of props used for every shoot because I am more interested in capturing spontaneous moments and personal connections in a beautiful and natural setting.
The greatest honour I have is when I am invited to document the life of a family over the course of many years. I would be privileged to meet up with you and learn about your family and capture authentic memories of your event, wedding, or family.
